Internet Censorship is a very bad thing. It is the act of denying someone rights to access
a certain website or place on the Internet. Many providers from many different countries
have been ruled by the court system to block many different sites, for example, the United
Kingdom blocked access to the Pirate Bay, which has made many people angry. Some
countries censor sites for good upon their own country, like China. China blocks sites like
YouTube, Facebook, Yahoo!, and even sites that are useful to the people who go to it, for
example, Google Drive. Although, they have blocked the Pirate Bay in the past, in 2012, they
unlocked it and do not censor it constantly anymore.
China blocks many social media sites, because they think that people will say bad things
about the government. They also block many proxies that would allow citizens to get
through their firewall. Many people in China are angry because of China blocking all of these
sites, but however China isn’t the only country that blocks sites like Facebook. A few others
that do this are North Korea, Cuba, and Iran. North Korea is no big surprise, since they are
basically cut off from the entire world and they have thoughts about the United States being
an evil country.
The reason many of these sites are blocked in communist countries are that people will
share what is going on within the country, which necessarily doesn’t always go public on the
news, and might possibly keep that happening, and then every other country would be an
enemy against them. They block the sites so almost no-one can news out, and if you try to
do that in some countries, like China, you will likely be thrown in prison for the rest of your
life, or killed.
Anonymous, a hacker group believes that anyone should be able to visit any site, any time.
They had threatened to call a fight for action against it, which many people followed their
ways. Some of the actions they despised of in the United States were SOPA, PIPA, and the
OPEN act. These acts were going to limit what you could and couldn’t do on the web.
Proxies may not always work in an anonymous situation, because that country may set
up a fake proxy just to collect data about the users attempting to get access to Facebook,
YouTube, Twitter, etc. Anonymity hardly ever goes without some sort of tracking, even if the
country doesn’t own the proxy. The company that owns that proxy may log who comes on,
and where they visit.
Countries censoring or blocking sites is a very horrible thing to do, because it does not allow
anyone to have their freedom of speech, even though many countries do not have that, I
believe that anyone should be allowed to visit any website they would like to. Freedom of
speech is a very important right in the United States of America, and many countries should
follow in their path if their citizens do not have that right.
